Rugs have been used to add a decorative and warming touch to homes for thousands of years. Plain rugs have a bold yet simplistic design, and they can be used to cover a large area in a living room, dining room, bedroom or hall (you can find kitchen rugs here). They can also add warmth and protection to wooden, stone and laminate floors, too. Large plain rugs come in a variety of colours and while the techniques that are used to produce them may have changed over the years, the welcoming feel that a rug creates remains the same as it has always been.

It is believed that rugs have been used to cover floors since as long ago as 7.000BC, when men in Neolithic times would use the fleece of goats and sheep to create floor coverings. The world's oldest existing rug is the Pazyryk rug, which was found in the tomb of a prince in Siberia and is estimated to have been made around 500BC.

Some years after this, in 2AD, rugs and carpets were popular in West Asia, and back then they were usually woven carpets or knotted pile rugs.In the 11th century, adventurer Marco Polo fell for the beautiful rugs he saw on his travels and brought some back to Europe. As Western Europe was introduced to these Oriental rugs, they soon became popular across the continent.

Today, some people choose to fit rug-style coverings in their home as permanent fitted carpets, but the traditional unfitted plain rugs offer an easy and versatile way to add character to a room.

Today's rugs can be created from a selection of man-made or natural fibres and plain wool rugs are a sensible and popular choice. Not only are these wool designs snug and warm, but they have a soft and luxurious feel to them, too.

Wool is very easy to dye, so these rugs can be produced in a colour that perfectly matches any colour scheme. When decorating their home, it is possible to choose a plain wool rug that matches the rest of the room, or opt for a bold, contrasting colour to introduce interest into a space. Rugs come in many different sizes to suit all needs and rooms. For example, a small rug can be placed near a door or in front of a fireplace, while large plain rugs can be used to cover most of the floor in a room.

Floor covering trends have changed in recent years, with some people choosing to install wood or laminate floors in favour of carpet. However, rugs continue to remain popular because they are the ideal way to add a splash of colour to wood or carpet. There is no wonder they are still so popular after all these years when they have so much universal appeal.
